Reviews for Still She Moves
"Lyrical imagery, mystical music, and ethereal vocals make listening to Wisconsin-based Ariane Lydon's third CD enchanting. She's a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, keyboards, harp), but it's Lydon's sultry vocals that draw in the listener. Lydon's styles vary from the cosmic to the Celtic. Her songs are truly melody-driven, not piggybacked on chord changes; as a result, her compositions are crafted and elegant. Lydon's lyrics are empowering, from the opener 'Loved in Your Arms,' which calls on people to make decisions in their lives, to 'Autumn Dance,' which encourages getting out to experience life: 'The autumn lights aren't for sale / You have to see them for yourself.' Topics vary from relationships to viewing the 'Northern Lights' for the first time to a wailing, moving tribute called 'Speechless at Ground Zero.' Lydon's is a voice that must be heard."Stephen Ide, Dirty Linen
"Ariane Lydon escapes categorization because of her wide variety of styles. Just when you utter 'singer-songwriter' she slips behind her Celtic harp and beguiles you. The 11 tracks of this CD swerve and slalom around her many facets as she accompanies herself on guitar, keyboard and harp swirling through sparkling love songs, a more bluesy tune, a most novel interpretation of [a] song we all learn in nursery school, a lickedy-split guitar instrumental and concluding with a reflective keyboard/synthesizer accompanied vocaleeze appropriately entitled 'Speechless at Ground Zero.' Lydon co-produced the CD with Bret Huus and Terry Nirva. Lydon works with the sound and repetition of words weaving them into particularly strong, sweet melodies. Where she has a message, she encodes it subtly into the fiber of the song, such as the admonition to involve yourself in life in 'Autumn Dance.' 'Come, Clean My Chimney' is a wry, cleanly erotic invitation. Her reinterpretation and arrangement of 'Oh, My Darling Clementine' shows the old nonsense song really has a meaning, at least in Lydon's hands and voice. The title of 'Straight Lies, Crooked Secrets' offers a hint of the clever course of Lydon's lyrics. 'Breathless Dancer' spins you with its beat, remarkable guitar dexterity and swirling words. Those longing for Lydon's harp will hear it in 'Northern Lights.' Lydon skirts the edge of new age, while avoiding its empty abyss. She continues to move with this richly musical recording."Rich Warren, Sing Out!
Review for The Open Harp
"Dedicated as I am to the loud and the aggro (which of course can convey ecstasy as well as rage), there’s something about the cool, watery, tranquil Celtic sounds of Lydon’s most recent album, The Open Harp, that compels me to embrace my inner 12-year-old girl. But even if it doesn’t do something similar for you, you may be deeply impressed on a technical level: she plays the 12-string guitar and harp simultaneously."Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader
Reviews for Lady of the Green
"Ariane Lydon's songs affirm the transforming power of solitude, a strong connection to nature, a welcoming of grace. Lady of the Green offers moments of supreme beauty. Highly recommended."Andrew Calhoun, Waterbug Records
"Lady of the Green is a complex emotional spider’s web of survival, rebirth and affirmation of the human spirit. The work of a gifted artist."John O' Reagan, Rock 'n' Reel
"Lydon weaves a mysterious spell with her marvelous, deep, wintry voice and swirling harp and guitar textures. Lady of the Green emphasizes her own compositions, notably the bleakly beautiful 'Cacophony' and 'Ashes and Clay,' a moody reflection on reincarnation that, like much of the original material here, evokes the mood and tone of Sandy Denny’s best work. 'Giving Thanks' is a lushly textured musical prayer that carries out its title's task admirably. Lydon is an accomplished instrumentalist, playing keyboards, harp, and guitar (the latter two simultaneously on two tracks). Lydon’s spry cover of the traditional 'Cindy' recasts the southern ballad as a Celtic air. Lady of the Green is an insidiously gorgeous work that admirably showcases Lydon’s manifold musical gifts."Mike Parrish, Dirty Linen
"Usually I have to listen to a record two or three times before I feel at home with it, but this one swept me away first time out. Lydon’s throaty pipes instantly recall June Tabor’s, but she brings formidable talents of her own to this disc: sharp songwriting that uses imagery drawn from nature to illustrate a variety of human conditions; a light yet thoughtful touch in arranging traditional songs; and the amazing ability to play 12-string guitar and Celtic harp simultaneously, to beautiful effect. Add to these a gift for spirited or serene instrumentals and a voice almost athletic in its suppleness, and you have an artist of rare versatility. Do yourself a favor and find a copy."Maureen Gerarden, Mad Folk News (newsletter of the Madison Folk Music Society)
"Spellbinding. Lydon’s music is far more than the sum of its parts. There is something in this album more enchanting than her award-winning piano or her artistry on guitar. Something deeper than her exquisite poetry, more beautiful than her lovely voice. There is a mysterious quality that is both old and new, bringing an old-world sound to the contemporary but not in that fairy-like, fluffy manner we hear so much today. A simple strength and wisdom bring substance and integrity to her work."Marilyn O’Malley, Victory Review
